Hey Marko. I have a band. How do I get on the radio and how do I get to the next level?
Your guess is as good as mine for how to get on the radio; that is something beyond a band's control, except of course writing good songs! Leave the radio shmoozing to record companies and radio departments. No commercial radio station will play an unsigned band in regular rotation, but most have weekly local music shows where you might get some play. No local radio show? Start one yourself, that's what I did; every Sunday night from 8-8:30 I hosted "localize it" on the Santa Barbara station (unpaid as a volunteer), where I would collect music from local bands, including mine, and play songs and talk about upcoming shows. I'd even have bands on as guests, it helped me to get a "feel" for radio and indirectly helped Sugarcult get known around town: "hey if you play my band on your show, Sugarcult can open for us this Friday..." that kind of thing. It always pays to think globally but act locally, support your local scene, and if there is no scene help round up bands and people to build one. I was very deeply immersed and involved with the Santa Barbara music community for 10 years before things started to take off for Sugarcult. Waiting for success to happen is a waste of time, you can make it happen in your own small world, then if it's good and someone influential takes notice, you might get a shot at the big leagues. Play lots of shows in as many towns as possible in your vicinity, record, rehearse, revise, on a regular basis, and most of all be yourselves; the world is clogged up with cookie-cutter bands that aren't the least bit creative: if you're going to do something that's already successfully being done, what's the point? Unless you have something new to add, you'll just get lost in the mix. Use your influences, don't be your influences.
good luck and have fun,
Marko 72/sugarcult
