Sugarcult basics; an interview by PunKid

> 1. Where are you from?

Santa Barbara, California

> 2. How did you get started as a group?

Found eachother through the small music scene in Santa Barbara. Played as
many shows as we could get, practiced 4 nights a week, did a website and kept
in touch with fans on email list.

> 3. How long have you been playing together?

Almost 4 years now.

> 4. What are your plans for the future?

We have a DVD coming out on Oct. 18 called "Action", a Fall/Winter USA tour
with the Ataris; in early 2003 we hope to play in Europe and Japan and get
started on our next record.

> 5. How do you like being on the road?

We love it; travelling, meeting new friends and bands; We've been going
non-stop for almost a year and a half so we definitely miss friends and
family and home life; but we've had years of that so we're stoked to be doing
this for now.

> 6. What is it like playing in front of so many people?

It's kind of surreal. It never gets old. The energy and rush you get from
playing to a raging crowd is what gives you the strength and courage to pull
it off.

> 7. How does it feel hearing yourself on the radio?

I always change the station just to be sure it's really happening and not
just our CD playing. It fucking rules. It's 3 minutes less of Creed
wannabes so it feels like we are helping to save rock n roll!

> 8. What is the hardest part of touring?

All the long drives and sleepless nights, especially if you get sick. It's
nearly impossible to nurse a cold on the road.

> 9. What is it like having so many fans, people asking for your
> autograph?

It's the biggest thrill ever. We work hard on our band, so to see support
coming from our fans is really the highest compliment we could ask for.
Things like the Grammies are all so fucking political and seem "fixed", there
is no reward more true and real than actual everyday people coming up to you
and saying your music has made them happy or affected their life in some way.
Sometimes it gets crazy like if we're really hungry and we know our dinner
is backstage getting cold; but we never forget that our fans are the reason
we get to do this for a living and always stay until we've met everyone.

> 10. What was the craziest/most embarrassing moment touring?

I had a horrible cold recently and we were playing in Farmingdale, NY just
outside of Long Island; I coughed up a big flegm ball and tried to spit it
out, but it was so heavy it just spilled out of my mouth onto my jacked and
guitar strap I was in the middle of an important guitar part and couldn't
really see how bad it looked but the sold out crowd got to check it out.
Pretty gross.

> 11. When will the follow up record be released?

In 2003.

> 12. What advice would you give to any up-and-coming bands?

Go to the Links feature on www.sugarcult.com and scroll down to my big rant
on band advice. In short: Think globally, act locally.

> 13. What was your favorite band to tour with, or who would you like to
> tour
with that you haven't?

I'd love to go out with a huge band like the Rolling Stones or U2 just to see
how all that works and to have the challenge of delivering a show to so many
thousands of people at once. Even the Foo Fighters, No Doubt, Green Day, etc
would be great. Luckily, all the bands we've toured with so far have been
great fun to be out with. We got along well with Less Than Jake, Unwritten
Law, Finch, the Used, Blink 182, Reunion Show, Jimmy Eat World, Reel Big
Fish, Fairview, The Exit, Goldfinger, Mest, Homegrown, Allister, Good
Charlotte, the Pietasters, Yellowcard, the Flipsides, and of course most of
the Warped Tour bands from '01 and '02. We'd do the Warped Tour again any
time.

> 14. Who is your biggest influence on your music?

We love a lot of the late '70's power-pop and punk sounds: Cheap Trick,
Elvis Costello, the Clash, the Ramones, Joe Jackson, the Cars, the Police,
the Pretenders, Real Kids, etc as well as some more modern rock: Foo
Fighters, Weezer, Superdrag, Jimmy Eat World, Green Day, the Strokes,
Nirvana, etc.

> 15. Where is your favorite place to tour?

We always have a blast on the East Coast, probably 'cause it's so far from
home. We have fun everywhere we go, so it's hard to say.

love,
