Static Ground.com Interview with Marko 72

1) Please introduce yourself (name/where from/age/etc...) and tell us what your role is in Sugarcult.

Marko 72/Santa Barbara, CA/Old enough to know better!/Guitar in Sugarcult (Bass in Bad Astronaut).

2) What is the date and time right now?

After midnight a couple days into 2002.

3) How did you guys meet and what led to the formation of Sugarcult?

I was playing bass in 2 Santa Barbara bands, The Lapdancers and Nerf Herder; the Lapdancers was an on again off again thing and Nerf Herder was kind of an extended temporary gig (I had joined on for a European tour when their bassist left at the last minute, and stayed on for a few months of shows back home in Calif as well); I was looking for something new and inspiring.  The Lapdancers got a gig opening for Superdrag (one of Sugarcult's fav bands!), and oddly enough a brand new local trio got to play earlier in the night: Sugarcult.  I was suprised at how natural Tim was onstage and how good the songs were, I was certain they had been around for awhile.  In fact, it was their first show ever.  Like any new relationship; we exchanged numbers, traded mix-tapes, and eventually I was asked if I could play guitar, cause they already had Airin on bass.  I lied and said yes, the rest is history in the making!

4) Describe the other members of the band in 4 words, including yourself.

Tim: Driven, Witty, Horny, Passionate.

Airin:  Mellow (when sober), Artistic, Stubborn, Carefree

Ben: Serious, Funny, Intelligent, Extreme

Marko (me): Romantic, Ambitious, Careful, Late!

5) What is your worst road habit?

Eating junk food and not sleeping.

6) What was your first job? How about your WORST job?

First job: making pizza (the only place that would hire rock n roll kids in my town).

Worst job: Driving around the country with my best friends and playing a rock show every night..just kidding!!!! Probably the summer job I had as a courier in Los Angeles years ago: No air conditioning, stuck in traffic all day, got in an accident on my second day!

7) If you weren't doing this, what do you think you would be doing with your life?

Something related to entertainment (acting?), writing, teaching college, or as a fast food chef.

8) I'm sure you guys have fans that do pretty much anything just to get close to you. Have you ever been fanatical about anything/anyone? Tell us about it.

I still am fanatical!  I would spend months in a row driving around the country to hang out with Sugarcult fans; what they don't know is we're their fans as much as they are ours!

9) How would you classify your music?

I hate labels!  There's 2 kinds of music GOOD and BAD; hopefully our kind starts with a "G".

10) Congratulations on the release of your new video! Is Start Static really your debut CD? How long did it take to record it? What the most difficult part?

Before "Start Static" we put out self-released collections of our demos, that were sort of unofficial albums one was called "Wrap Me Up in Plastic", the older one was called "Eleven", and we did a weird thing called "Live at Lincoln Lounge" which was the result of our drummer Ben having too much time on his hands and beer in his system when he was playing with his new CD burning software.  The hardest part of making our first real album was deciding which 11 songs to record out of over 30 possible.

11) What do you eat on your pizza?

I know it sounds boring, but I like it plain the best!

12) Who is the coolest band/artist that you've ever played with? Tell us about it.

I'll have to think about this one for a while...next time, okay.

13) Tell us about the current tour.

We just finished a month with Good Charlotte, Mest, and our new favorite band Lefty; every show was sold out and the crowds were off the hook!  We just now are starting a new tour with Homegrown and Finch who seem like nice cats.  Every tour has it's own personality, that's what keeps it fresh and new.

14) If you were a boyband, who would you each be? (for example "I would be the Justin Timberlake because I want to date Britney Spears.")

Ahem!  We already ARE A BOY BAND!!! C'mon Britney get hip and ditch that loser, it's all about Sugarmania in 2002!!!

15) I did get a chance to see you guys live, and like I told you then, I was very impressed and that is rare for someone who sees as many bands as I do. What is it that you want people to walk away from one of your shows with? What kind of impression do you want to leave?

We know that we are lucky to have the opportunity to tour and play for lots of people so we never take it for granted; we try to put 110% energy and passion into every show we play so that whether people see us they may like us or they may hate us, but they'll never forget us! I want people to have a good time.  It's this simple when someone thinks of a kick ass rock n roll show, I want them to think of Sugarcult.

16) What sets Sugarcult apart from other bands?

We always have time to hang with our fans, and we are better dressed than most bands!!!

Peace, love, and understanding,

MARKO 72
