Interview with Marko 72 of Sugarcult.

1. State your name/what band your in/what you play
My name is Marko 72 and I play guitar in Sugarcult.

2. Is it fun being in a major band?
Yes, but music is a worthwhile activity in and of itself. It was fun when we were a small town local band that nobody cared about and it's even more fun now that we get to make records and tour all over the world.

3. Is fame all it's cracked up to be?
We're not rich, we don't have Britney's cell number, we don't get recognized in the frozen foods aisle of the supermarket, and the National Enquirer doesn't care who we sleep with. Ask me that question again in a few years!

4. How long have you and your band been working to get this far?
I've been playing in bands on one level or another since 10th grade, which was a long time ago! The four of us in Sugarcult have been at it non-stop with total dedication and hard work since 1999. Hopefully, we have a long way to go!

5. What are some negative aspects to being in a band?
The negative aspects are mixed with the positive aspects: we get to travel and see the world, but that means we never sleep in the same bed, and are always away from friends and family. When one of us get's a cold, mom isn't there to make chicken soup and baby you, instead it's your tour manager saying "take some fuckin' Dayquil, and quit whining, you're on in 5 minutes!"

6. If there is one thing you can change about your band, what would it be?
Our name. You try being in a band named after a lesbian gang!

7. What is your band working on right now?
After almost 2 years of constant touring, we are finally home to do our next album. This month (March) is all about writing and finishing song ideas before we head into the studio.

8. How is touring? Is it all fun and games or is it hard work?
We play the shows for free, the money is to pay us for all the hours of travelling and for being away from home. Next time you go to a show, try to appreciate that the band you're watching probably drove anywhere from 4 to 15 hours to get to the show, slept in a divey roadside motel the night before, and will probably be 3 states away by that time the following week. That said, the answer to your question is: both. Touring is all work and all play, and we love it!

9. Do you ever get into fights with your fellow band members?
Yes, we fight like brothers. We drive eachother crazy, but at the same time we've all got eachother's back.

10. Do you feel happy about the way your band is headed?
Absolutely, we've already gone further than we ever expected, so at this point it's just fun to see where the adventure will take us next. I'm really happy that we are starting to get popular in other countries (Europe, Japan, etc). We don't mind our band getting big as long as we keep our hearts in the right place and remember what it's all about: having a good time and being respectful to our fans.

11. If you could give one piece of advice to other people in bands about becoming successful, what would it be?
Don't waste your time and energy worrying about "making it" or becoming "famous", that stuff will come to you eventually if: a) you work really hard, b) your songs are really good, c) you have confidence and believe in your ideas, even when nobody else does, and d) you play music because you love it, not just to be a rock star. You're successful when you form a band and get some songs together, everything else is icing on the cake.
cheers,
Marko/Sugarcult.
